Seaweed herbarium
I spent a large part of my biology undergraduate degree (many years ago) studying animals without internal skeletons (invertebrates) and seaweed (large, visible, marine algae) that occur in the marine intertidal zone. During that time, I spent many happy hours wandering along rock platforms of south-eastern Australia and snorkeling in shallow water to observe, collect and then preserve algae. I was lucky enough to create two preserved algae collections (herbaria) during the course of my studies. These were among my most favourite assignments of all time! I love seaweed, and I still have (and love) my algal herbaria.
This project is inspired by those herbaria and the beautiful, beguiling forms and habits of some of the seaweed I observed (or wanted to observe).
A couple of specimens from my algae herbarium.
